hey guys welcome to help you sister we're going to hit you up with the 1892 presidential election go get a shot glass I'm going to pour you a little bit of a bourbon Democrat see if we can bring back Grover Cleveland From the Ashes to defeat the incumbent Benjamin hour since we're even going to invite a populist to the party so let's take a look at the candidates will take a look at the issues with take a look at growing your brain will say it right now so take a look at the results for we have Grover Cleveland who has the distinct honor of being the only two-term president that served 2 non-consecutive terms he was elected in 1884 he lost in 1888 he's back in 1892 when he's going to win this guy against the incumbent Benjamin Harrison yes he's the grandson of William Henry he's representing the Republican party and a can see from the map he's going to have some problems in the South were going to talk about that and the force bill that he wanted to get through Congress to give black voting rights protection to blacks in the South that's not going to work out for him in the South but you can also notice that out in the the Republican party has been hatched up buy a new introductory party called the populist party so they're definitely going to see some dealignment in the Republican party as they try to figure out what type of party did they want to be the Democrats on the other hand even though they're running a bourbon Democrat and Grover Cleveland meaning he's a classical liberal he's a conservative Democrat especially on financial issues the big one being the gold standard vs. bimetallism and where the Democrats are going to head squarely in Grover Cleveland on the side of the big gold and that's not going to do him any favors at West as we see James Weaver of the populist party rack up some numbers electrically it's going to be a pretty big win for the Democrat was Grover Cleveland getting 277 electoral votes 145 electoral vote for the incumbent Benjamin Harris but there are the populist they're going to rack up five states they're going to get 22 electoral votes securing about 9% the popular vote that's going to be a huge problem as the Republican Party tries to figure out what it wants to be electoral map let's take a look at each party each of the nomination process and then we'll take a look at the issue that made the selection such as Tesla so it's not going to be all smooth sailing for the incumbent Republican Benjamin Harrison I'm in fact didn't want to seek a second term he felt that it was his responsibility to have to do that as leader of the party now he had a very active presidency most historians don't write his presidency very good but it was very active in fact his Congress was Nick the Billion Dollar Congress for allegedly being the first to spend a billion dollars in fact Democrats took control of Congress in 1890 because of all the spending now in that active presidency Benjamin Harrison signed a lot of laws he signed a shirt antitrust that that was supposed to go after trust and corporations in the novel he's wasn't used very aggressively but it was signed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act which was a nod to bimetallism which is a huge issue in this campaign is going to keep the Publican party competitive out Weston up in the north is the populist really try to enter grab the you know the the Helm of that issue we also see him spending some money in terms of preserving National Forest expanding the Navy and also McKinley Tariff that's another humongous issue in this campaign the Republican party is going to side squarely on the side of protectionism the McKinley Tariff was a 48% tax on Imports so this is a humongous dictionary tax which is going to protect manufacturers and businesses from foreign competition of course this is going to make prices rise and that's not very much supported in the south in the west and in fact in the South Benjamin Harris is really going to write off his chances what he forcefully fights for the force Bill say that 10 times fast before spill was basically a Voting Rights bill which would have put the southern states under the guise of Federal Protection for voting lights when it came to elections that failed but not very popular in the South now Benjamin Harrison did have competition is Secretary of State even though he didn't want to fight for the nomination was thrown into the ring in this is Blaine the Republican who lost to Grover Cleveland in 1884 so out of the party insiders want to lose your back but he really didn't want it in fact three two children passed away right before the nomination but at the end of the day he did resign from the Secretary of State position when he was pushed by Benjamin Harrison that you know you're either going to run for this thing and if you're going to run for this thing you better quit so he did quit the Secretary of State position but he's going to come in second and we also have kind of a surprise you know Dark Horse that's going to be in the race in William McKinley he didn't actively pursue the nomination but he's going to get a lot of delegate votes at the convention and he's going to be next up at bat in 1896 as the star of the Republican party but at the end of the day Benjamin Harrison is going to win the nomination again his second term for presidency against the guy who was already president and Grover Cleveland go figure so let's go take a look at the Pigman the bourbon Democrat the proper Cleveland is back if that Grover Cleveland is only one of two on politicians that have ever secure their nomination for their party three times in a row the other being FDR in 1932 236 for 1844 election in consecutive now in Democrats or classical liberal Democrat and especially in economics they're very conservative in fact the big issue for the big man Grover Cleveland is the gold standard he doesn't like loose Financial policies he doesn't like a lot of spending he thinks that we need to be conservative so he's fighting for the gold standard that's not going to help him turn out a lot a lot of boats in the South he's going to win the South because he's a Democrat but you going to see the populist do pretty well in the south in fact the populist that Thirty 40% of the vote in Mississippi 20 or 30% of the vote in Alabama pretty well but because he's a Democrat and we still have this kind of solid South Democratic South idea he's going to take those States for the most part for granted even though he did talk a lot about his opposition to the force belt they didn't think the federal government should be in Audino Southern States in terms of federal regulations protecting voting rights that that was a state issue and that's really a nod to say the white South but definitely the racist South which doesn't want black people vote at the other big issue for him is going to be Terrace definitely wants to see lower tariffs you going to be careful not to say free trade but he definitely believes 48% of a tariff is way too high he did face a challenge some of the party insiders didn't love Grover Cleveland he also fought against corruption in a lot the Democratic political machines like Tammany Hall in New York so they didn't see a friend in Grover Cleveland they threw their man David Hale into the ring who is the senator from New York in the former New York Governor but he's not going to do very well in that nomination testing Grover Cleveland is going to take the cake he's going to eat the cake to how about that so now let's take a look at some of the other parties that ran including the populist you did pretty darn good The People's Party the populist party in 1892 we have a new party on the ballot the populist which is really a coalition that came out of not only unions like the Knights of Labor but also farmer organizations like the farmers Alliance and the Grange and they're really incensed D lining from the Republican Party who they see as being now to pro-business they lost touch with the common man so they're forming a People's Party they're going to be fighting for things like public worship over the telegraph the telephone lines and the railroads for free silver for postal saving banks for a graduated income tax for a huge shift in the way that the economy runs now this like I said before is going to her the Republican party and as we look at that map we can look at it again because it's a computer screen right when we look at that map we can see that the populace are taking five states that are surrounded by States for the most parts that were won by the Republicans so the population are going to create a huge dent in that Republican party and innocence shift it for a little while as it eventually moves to more of a Teddy Roosevelt Progressive kind of thing and then it shifts away from that the fact that we look at the populist party platform you can hear a lot of ideas that we still here in American politics let's take a lesson we have witnessed for more than a quarter of a century the struggles of the two great political party is for power and plunder well grevious wrongs have been inflicted upon the suffering people WeChat cars that the controlling influence dominating both these parties have permitted the existing Dreadful conditions to develop without serious effort to prevent or restrain them neither do they now promised us any substantial reform they have agreed together to it nor in the coming campaign every issue but one they proposed to drown out the outcries of a plundered people with the Uproar of a sham battle over the tariffs so that capitalist corporations National Banks Rings trust watered stock the demon is mission of silver and the oppressions of the uninsured they all be lost sight of they propose to sacrifice our homes lives and children on the altar of Mammon to destroy the multitude in order to secure corruption fun from the millionaires so that's the populist James Weaver is going to hold that mantle as he runs for president and then we're going to take a look at one more party on the radar here but we do have John Bidwell from California running under the banner of the prohibition party number one but they're going to be around for a couple decades and I think it's born to understand that they're not just about Prohibition about banning alcohol they were also for votes for women there are also four investment in public schools and they also talked about public ownership of the railroads so this is something that they had in common with the populist and there was some in 1890 one of these two parties merging together and really creating a force in American politics but that never materialized they have too many differences culturally I think so that's going to fall apart but we do have them on the ballot or not going to do very well we are going to talk about that general election right now so true to the actual election for the most part we see Benjamin Harrison really clinging to the McKinley Tariff saying that we need to protect American manufacturers from foreign influence Grover Cleveland a much more conservative Democrat is saying we need to lower that Tower in order to have lower prices for consumers he's talking a lot about the gold standard Grover Cleveland and how these loose economic policies of bimetallism in the Harrison Administration or hurting the American consumers and he's also going to talk about Grover Cleveland his opposition to the force act really to secure that solid South solid South is stolen solid South Patrol Democrat he wants to make sure that they know that these Republicans want what he sees as interfering regulations and the federal armed into the south in terms of protecting black rights now the populace they're going to be really the ones that are going to surprise buddy and especially the Republicans they're going to take five states in the midwest in the north that's really going to shift this election to the Democrats but at the end of the day the populace in 1896 are going to get absorbed into the Democratic party has the Democratic Party candidate did Superman Democrats and its conservatism in William Jennings Bryan who's for free silver but I'm getting ahead of myself only other thing I would say Benjamin Harrison's wife died two weeks before the actual election and I stopped all campaign but he didn't get the sympathy vote because he lost the election so here we have it Grover Cleveland the only President elected to two non-consecutive terms and the only president to win the popular vote three times in a row and that's not going to happen again of course until FDR so I think that's enough for now go
