hey guys welcome to hip Hughes history as we hit you up with the election of 1888 that's right Grover Cleveland the incumbent Democratic president he wants to be at 2 to see if Republican Benjamin Harrison has something to say about that kitty up in the morning guys go  your boots of education and let's see if we can't go get her done right now what start with the Democrats because the Pigman he's the one in office that's right former mayor of Buffalo New York Grover Cleveland not Grover Cleveland is a bourbon Democrat he's kind of the conservative Democrat and you have to he's the first Democrat in the White House time and in fact he's going to be the first sitting Democratic president since 1840 Martin van Buren to be nominated for a second term by his party and it is going to be unanimous he's a very enterprising especially amongst Democrats the economy is doing pretty good is only hiccup in the plan is that his vice presidents kind of dead buried under the ground that would be Thomas who passed away in the first term and we didn't replace the vice president back and we did have that new Amendment so what we're going to be able to do is nominate a new vice president at the convention and that's going to be Senator Alan Thurman from the great state of Ohio it's kind of a swing state one caveat is the dude's going to be 75 years old and that's going to be a pro on this we see that Grover Cleveland is really going to rely on his vice president to be kind of his speaking mouthpieces across the country and being 75 back in 1888 was being like a hundred and ten today but either way the Democratic positions are pretty solid they don't really believe the Tariff they say that an unnecessary text is it on just text so this is a southern-based party even though Grover Cleveland is from the north so tariffs generally as seen in the South as being a negative because they're supposedly paying the higher prices that Tara create to protect Northern manufacturers of the other position that he's going to take is going to be basically to oppose Union pensions the Democrats believe in a very limited government and lowering spending so that's going to create a little hiccup in the plan for re-election because there's to be a lot of veterans and I don't like not getting paid they believe the statehood for western territories and they believe in the gold standard these are hard money Democrats they don't like the idea of inflation of creating more money out there they think that's kind of too much involvement by the government this is Jeffersonian democracy they believe in a limited small-government States being empowered to solve their own local problems when you get back into that White House what's a Cabin Republicans going to be a little bit more competitive on their side of the aisle first we have James Blaine who lost to Grover Cleveland in 1884 corruption in his background he drops early even though he's the front-runner he doesn't want to risk it again he doesn't want Republicans to lose what we had John Sherman of the Sherman Antitrust Act which hasn't happened yet for the great state of Ohio for governor of Michigan really when James Blaine dropped out the indoors two candidates John Sherman and general Benjamin Harrison that's right he is the grandson of William Henry Harrison the dude who didn't wear his coat in my vehicle to come saying created an old Legend I'm getting off cast you can check it out in the description below if you want to learn more but at the end of the day it's going to take about eight rolls before Benjamin Harrison becomes the nominee and what really kind of put him to the Forefront is not only is he from the swing state of Indiana but he's also a veteran and Grover Cleveland talking about you cutting union pension having a former Union soldier out there on the front of the ticket it's going to be pretty pain official for the Republicans he's also very eloquent in terms of how he speaks so he's going to be the and for the Republicans we're not going to create a separate section for the third parties because they're not going to do very well in this election but there's a whole bunch of them that are Brewing under the surface that eventually will create the populist and really change the landscape of American politics but we did have the greenbacks and union labor party was an industrial Reform Party it was a Prohibition party in American party and even the Equal Rights party and they're going to nominate for the second time she ran 1884 valve what show Hillary Clinton you're not the first just the first a major political party and then I want to take that map out so bad that my Arch alright We're Off to the Races but not really off the racist you have to remember guys in the 19th century the political candidates for office didn't really campaign they would have their surrogates do it and this might have been Grover Cleveland's biggest mistake because he's pretty popular he even forbade his cabinet for campaigning so really the only person on the road for him is 75 year old Alan Thurman what an energetic Dynamic speaker he must have been at the ripe old age of 75 Grover Cleveland issues economic issues we have the gold standard and even though both candidates favor the gold standard it is the Republican party with politicians like John Sherman we're pushing for things like a Sherman Silver act which you're going to innocence create some inflation by creating more out there for loans and for the taking but that the gold standard the best thing for the people to keep the government out of the business of creating art official monetary policies and such like that kind of course is the other huge issue in this Ballpark and its really does divide the candidates in December at 1887 Grover Cleveland in his State of the Union Address so that any unnecessary taxation is an onion taxation specifically pointing out the terrorist you have to remember the basic idea is tariffs or taxes on Imports so this hurts Northern manufacturers in the eyes of the Republican Party manufacturers that create jobs for Americans and that are putting out Pro what's that are more affordable to sense when you are a free Trader and you're allowing these cheap products to plug the market people aren't going to buy American and that's going to mean that Americans are going to lose their jobs of course Southerners believe this is Kaka that we should be able to buy whatever we want on a free market and the not be hittin the purse at the end of the day this is going to create better products and better prices but the one caveat is that there are immigrants based in large cities like New York City choke when Grover Cleveland becomes a free Trader he's aligning himself with the biggest nation in the world that also believes in free trade which is the UK which is Great Britain and of course irish-americans. I like them too much that's probably going to cost him some immigrant votes in these major Urban centers in New York is one of the biggest swing States and that's where the big man Grover Cleveland is from so when he loses New York he loses the election deposition of Civil War pensions Grover Cleveland opposes large amounts of spending he wants to cut back on Union pensions he believes in a limited government if anything the state should deal with their local issues so course this is going to put him in a negative View for many Union you know veterans and many of them are Northerners who live in big cities as well that he needs their votes and he's not going to get them of course Benjamin Harrison not only believes in pensions he's going to get one because he is General Benjamin Harris so that's going to be a huge issue in terms of dividing the vote as well now we also have some corruption to talk about so I know you don't believe it corruption in the 19th century is unbelievable last election Tammany Hall support Cleveland even though Grover Cleveland when after Tammany Hall Grover Cleveland is a Democrat that believes in getting rid of corruption and this is a lining him with what we're called Republican mugwumps people that are against corruption that voted for Grover Cleveland Tammany Hall was now actively supporting Benjamin Harrison to again that's going to give him a big problem in big cities where these political machines have political power but the real Scandal is going to be the blocks the five now I know you're not going to believe me but literally bought people's votes back then ballots were printed by the political parties and if somebody didn't know who to vote for you could give them to bits and they vote for who you wanted to actually really like two bucks would buy you a boat so we have dude by the name of William Wade Dudley and he is the treasurer of the Republican Party he's from Indiana and his job and Indiana was literally to go after Democratic voter suppression and Corruption but this time it's going to be guilty any issues a letter to all the party County chair people that's called the blocks of five letter and basically what he did was he chopped up Indiana which is a swing state of very important swing state and heat wrap it up in the five blocks they put a chairman in charge of each block with a huge amount of money in their job was to go out and find floaters floaters were people who would sell their vote and basically they're trying to buy the election and of course this latter is going to be intercepted by the party and it's going to be printed and everybody's going to know about it so this is going to energize the Democratic party but not enough and at the end of the day it's one of the reasons that we're going to move to secret balloting that's not going to be in charge by the political party because there's too much room corruption the other kind of Scandal are delicious issue that's kind of affecting us election is called the merchants in letter not to merchants in letter was actually written by a guy by the name of George Bush would be and I just butchered someone's name so for his relatives apologized but he wrote a letter to sura Lionel sackville-west was the British ambassador to the United States under false pretenses he said that he was a former British citizen he was now an American citizen living in California and he wanted to know who's the British about 4 and of course the letter that comes back to him says vote for Grover Cleveland remember that free trade issue and the Republicans are going to use that letter in the papers to influence the Irish American vote in these large Urban centers if you vote for Grover Cleveland so that's going to affect the election as well so those are major issues now we're going to go and have an election day and then we're going to go to big map out we're all going to clap as we look at it and under who won and why they want start off with the popular vote Benjamin Harrison the Republican from Indiana is going to win about 5.4 million votes but Grover Cleveland he's going to win 5.5 million vote so we have our winner in Benjamin Harrison popular vote is not going to pick the true winner ends up being 233 electoral votes for Benjamin Harrison on 168 electoral votes for Grover Cleveland at the end of the day Grover Cleveland home state of New York it's probably Tammany Hall and some of these Irish Americans that are voting for the Republicans because it is free trade policies and alignment with Great Britain if 201 electoral votes back then York he loses Indiana another swing state and really we're looking at a man that's not going to change that traumatically really until we get until the 1930s with FDR and major d-line and realignment of the Republican Party the right now we have our way Benjamin Harrison is going to be the man now Grover Cleveland you think he'd be done you don't want to lose the presidency you're out of here but it's not going to be done he's going to be back in 1892 to become the first president to win two non-consecutive terms in office and he's going to become only
