The Wizard of Oz as Populist Parable

you think you know the story of The Wizard of Oz but you probably only no part of it the book that the movie was based on was written by L frank Baum and originally published 1900 some Economist in Astoria is that the book is an economic fairy tale story about America and the age of the gold standard and they're telling each character represents a person or group active in the late 1800s the Scarecrow represents the farmers in the West what's the timer 10 mortgages in old money to the bankers in the East when deflation hits the value of the farmers deathrows the amount they owe the bankers was not worth much more than at the time of the loan bad for the farmers the great for the bankers yellow brick road is the gold-standard many believe the end of the gold standard would fix everything but the citizens of the East were represented by the munchkins wanted to keep the gold standard and played Dorothy to Follow the yellow brick road the only group suffering and seeking an end to the gold standard industrial workers are represented by the 10-man his joints are rusted and you can no longer works much like the 18% of Americans that were unemployed in 1890 for the Cowardly Lion William Jennings Bryan a populist leader and the face of the free silver movement he believes it adding silver to the gold standard for the ease deflation and solve the nation's economic woes of course there is not. Governor title The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or ozie the abbreviation for an ounce of gold the Emerald City is America's Capitol Washington DC where everything is a dollar colored glasses literally it appears to be green in the end is Dorothy's shoes at favor her silver shoes the shoes were silver in the book but were changed to Ruby for the movie it turns out it was right under her nose the entire time adding tell her to the money supply
